Game Instructions

Basic Controls

Control your player with WSAD, context-specific controls come up as the context arises.

Context-specific buttons are *not* case sensitive.

Apart from that you can click and drag stuff with the mouse in and around your inventories and in the cooking scene. More on that later.

Main Game Screen

You start behind your cart in the main game screen.

Now's a good time to take a look at the interface, which consists of three main things:

1) Menu Buttons

Only the recipe button really works at this stage; the others are placeholders. In the case of the "Other" button a placeholder for a function that I haven't even decided on yet.

The recipe button is great though, give it a go!

2) Quick Inventory

This bit is for stuff that you carry around with you, i.e. is distinct from your cart inventory, the home inventory and the shop's stock.

3) Information and status panel

Again almost entirely placeholder. At the moment it shows the time (in a ridiculous "number of seconds elapsed since program started to run" format which is of no use to man nor beast); your money level (not yet implemented), has a placeholder for hunger/thirst levels (might never be implemented) and a count for the number of people walking around on screen.

This last bit is the only remotely interesting thing about this panel so far - if you can't see the "people" walking around head to the right of the street scene. Don't be put off by the fact that they are all just 2*1 nearly 2 dimensional rectangles.

Home is two doors to the left of your cart for now

You are probably wondering what to do here. The answer is precious little except move to the left to go into the house, which is two doorways to the left of the cart. A dialogue will pop up to tell you to press "E" to enter when you are in range.

You can check out your cart, but a) there is nothing in it and b) you can't do anything with the nothing that is there yet, so it's a bit of a non-starter really.

You can also nip over to the shop, which is a few doors along to the right, about six or seven. Again, not much to do here except wish that there was more to life.

Best just go to the house.

The House screen

Here you are, home sweet home. The whole place is a little bare right now... hoping to put some kind of living room arrangement in the room at the bottom when it comes to it, maybe a dining area just up from there.

For now its just the kitchen really, which is by the red arrow.

Go there! That's literally the only interesting bit.

Notice that the inventory persists.

No, notice it. It took me ages to get that working.

Cooking!

Once you've pressed "E" to start cooking you should see this scene; the recipe may be embiggened so press "r" to unembiggen it.

This is where food preparation will all take place; for now you can't really do anything except admire the glorious placeholder cuboids and cylinders.

As their shape is not always entirely communicative of their function:

1) Knife set

2) Chopping Board

3) Cruet

4) Plate

5) Frying Pan

6) Pot

To do anything at all you need to start by dragging a food item to the chopping board (2).

Then you can either click on the knife to then click on the food and "chop" it - just don't be surprised that you won't see any change at all, it is all behind the scenes at this point!

Otherwise you can drag the food around the place - click once to pick up then click again to put down. Note though that the mouse pointer position determines what and where it is being put down...

At the moment the most you can do is put it in either the pot or the frying pan; it doesn't actually fry or boil yet and you can't get it out again - but it is in there behind the scenes!

That's it! Comments welcome!
